A word count can keep a draft within a brief. A character count can help with a constrained field. Neither can decide what the piece should say.
Counts update as you type. Case changes and spacing edits alter your text, so use Undo to restore the text from before the last tool edit. Download a text file before closing the tab if you need to keep the result.
How are words counted?
Where supported, the tool uses the browser’s language-aware word segmentation. Older browsers use a letter-and-number fallback. Counts can differ from another editor, especially for hyphens, punctuation or languages without spaces.
What does the character count include?
Characters are counted as Unicode code points, including spaces and line breaks. Some emoji and accented combinations use more than one code point. The input limit is measured separately in UTF-16 code units.
How are paragraphs and reading time measured?
Blank lines separate paragraphs. Reading time is an estimate at 200 words per minute, not a measured reading speed. Sentence boundaries depend on the browser’s text segmentation.
What does Tidy spacing do?
It collapses repeated spaces and tabs, trims spaces around each line, reduces runs of blank lines to one blank line, and trims the beginning and end. It does not rewrite your words or fix grammar.
